It has come to light that a 13-year-old girl died after getting caught in an electric trap in Siraha. The incident, which had remained undisclosed for a long time, surfaced nearly a month later.
The deceased has been identified as 13-year-old Gulsana Khatun of Golbazaar Municipality–9. She had left home around 9 a.m. on Falgun 29 (March 12) to cut grass.
When she didn’t return home, her family filed a missing person report at the Area Police Office in Mirchaiya. During the search, her body was discovered on Chaitra 12 (March 25) in the Ghurmi River in Golbazaar–9.
The body was found stuffed inside a plastic sack, raising suspicions of murder and prompting police to launch an investigation.
A joint team from the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB), Madhesh Province Police, and local Siraha police was deployed for the investigation. During the course of the investigation, police arrested 24-year-old Bir Bahadur Sarki, also known as Janak, of Govindapur in Golbazaar–9 on Sunday. According to Siraha police spokesperson Birendra Kumar Paswan, a seven-day remand has been obtained from the Siraha District Court to proceed with the investigation under charges of homicide.
According to police, the girl died after being caught in an electric trap set by Sarki. He had installed the trap in his maize field to protect the crops from animals. The girl is believed to have been caught in the trap while collecting grass.
After realizing that the girl had died in his electric trap, Sarki allegedly packed the body in a sack and dumped it, according to police reports.
