7 people die daily in road accidents in Nepal

Road accidents in Nepal continue to claim a high number of lives every day, according to Nepal Police Chief Inspector General (IGP) Deepak Thapa.

In the fiscal year 2081/82 (2024–25), a total of 28,692 road accidents were reported across the country, resulting in the deaths of 2,549 people. This means an average of 7 people die every day in road crashes.

Most Deaths in Madhesh Province

IGP Thapa shared that the highest number of road accident fatalities were recorded in Madhesh Province.

Rise in Crime Cases Across the Country

Speaking at a meeting of the Federalism Strengthening and National Concerns Committee, IGP Thapa also noted an increase in crime cases:

  • In fiscal year 2081/82, 59,204 criminal cases were registered.
  • This is a 1.24% increase compared to the previous year (58,470 cases in 2080/81).

Kathmandu Leads in Crime Reports

  • The highest number of criminal cases was recorded in Kathmandu Valley: 16,172 cases.
  • Next were Madhesh Province and Koshi Province.
  • Karnali Province had the lowest number of cases.

Nepal Police: 24/7 Vigilance

IGP Thapa also highlighted daily police operations:

  • 7,255 reports received by Nepal Police in 24 hours across the country
  • 226 vehicle patrols
  • 609 checkpoints
  • 712 rural patrols
  • 1,110 foot patrols
  • 30,374 personnel deployed daily for public safety
