The 8th Elite Women’s National Boxing Championship is set to take place at Gautam Buddha University in Greater Noida from March 21-27, featuring around 300 of India’s top female boxers. This tournament, held in association with the UP Boxing Association, returns to the same venue that successfully hosted the competition last year.
The championship, which follows the guidelines of the World Boxing and Boxing Federation of India (BFI), is open to boxers born between January 1, 1984, and December 31, 2005. Each state unit can send up to 10 boxers, with entries closing by March 10 and final name confirmations due by March 15.
The action will kick off on March 20 with the arrival of participants, the draw, and a technical meeting. The opening rounds will take place from March 21 to 24, followed by the quarterfinals on March 25, the semi-finals on March 26, and the finals on March 27.
BFI Secretary General Hemanta Kumar Kalita highlighted the importance of this championship, noting that it serves as a key event for discovering and training boxers for the upcoming Olympic cycle. This competition will be crucial for identifying and nurturing future champions.
Each bout will follow a three-round format, with each round lasting three minutes, and a one-minute rest in between. The matches will adhere to the ten-point must-scoring system, in line with World Boxing competition rules. Boxers will also have to undergo a daily weigh-in during the event.
Alongside the 300 competitors, more than 100 coaches and support staff, as well as 60 technical officials, will be present to ensure the smooth running of the tournament.
Defending champions, Railway Sports Promotion Board (RSPB), will aim to retain their title after an impressive performance in 2023, where they won five golds, one silver, and two bronze medals. They narrowly beat Haryana, who finished second with three golds, three silvers, and one bronze.
