Trapped in Assam Coal Mine Flooding

Nine workers, including two Nepalis, are trapped in a coal mine in Assam’s Dima Hasao district after water flooded the mine, blocking its entrance.

According to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, one of the trapped Nepalis is Ganga Bahadur Shrestha, though his exact hometown in Nepal is unknown. Other trapped workers include Sanjit Sarkar from West Bengal and seven others: Legion Magar (a Nepali-speaking resident of Assam), Hussain Ali, Zakir Hussain, Sarp Barman, Mustafa Sheikh, Khushimohan Rai, and Sarat Goyari.

Reports suggest that the bodies of three workers have been spotted, but officials are yet to confirm this. A specialist team from Visakhapatnam has been called to assist, as the water inside the mine has reached a depth of about 100 feet, posing a risk of drowning.
