David Schwimmer is speaking out against Kanye West’s recent controversial statements. The Friends star took to Instagram on Saturday, urging Elon Musk to remove West from X (formerly Twitter). West has been making headlines for his troubling social media activity, following his wife Bianca Censori’s eye-catching appearance at the Grammy Awards.
Schwimmer Joins the Fight Against Hate Speech
Schwimmer recently signed a letter with the organization Jews in the Cinema (JITC), condemning what they call antisemitism in the Motion Picture Academy. Now, he is focusing on West’s disturbing remarks.
In his Instagram post, Schwimmer stated, “We can’t stop a hateful person from spreading ignorance, but we CAN stop giving him a massive platform, Mr. Musk.” He pointed out that West has 32.7 million followers on X, which is more than double the global Jewish population. According to Schwimmer, this level of influence makes his words dangerous and can lead to real-world harm.
Schwimmer Questions Lack of Action Against West
West has faced bans in the past for similar behavior. Between 2022 and 2023, Musk’s platform suspended West for nearly eight months after he posted a swastika and other offensive content. At the time, the backlash led to major brands like Adidas cutting ties with him. However, Schwimmer noted that X’s moderation policies have become more lenient since then, allowing West to continue posting hateful messages.
In his post, Schwimmer expressed concern over the lack of widespread outrage, writing:
“I don’t know what’s worse—him openly calling himself a Nazi, which suggests he supports the extermination of all marginalized groups including his own, or the fact that people aren’t angry enough to demand his removal from social media.”
West’s Troubling Statements Spark Backlash
Recently, West has gone on a social media rant, making numerous inflammatory statements. In the past 24 hours, he has:
- Praised Adolf Hitler and called himself a Nazi
- Promoted a Yeezy t-shirt featuring a swastika
- Repeated controversial comments about slavery
- Criticized the #MeToo movement
- Made negative remarks about plus-sized models
In one of his posts, West wrote, “I don’t like or trust any Jewish person, and I’m saying this completely sober.” He also stated, “I love Hitler. Now what? I’m never apologizing for my Jewish comments.”
These comments have led to some backlash from public figures like Meghan McCain and Piers Morgan. However, there has been no large-scale movement demanding his removal from social media. Schwimmer believes this silence is a form of complicity and is calling for stronger action against West’s hate speech.
As the controversy continues, the question remains: Will Musk take action against Kanye West once again, or will his platform allow him to keep spreading harmful messages?
