The Producers Guild awarded its top feature film prize to Anora on Saturday, giving a big boost to the indie comedy that had already won major awards at the Critics Choice Awards and the DGA Awards just the day before. This film, which took home the prestigious Palme d’Or at Cannes last year, has now bagged its third big win in less than 24 hours.
Director Baker, who made it from the DGA ceremony at the Beverly Hilton to the PGA event at the Fairmont Century Plaza, took a moment to thank his fellow producers, Alex Coco and Samantha Quan. He praised them for their unwavering support and the “miracles” they helped pull off every day.
Anora triumphed over tough competition in the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures, beating films like Dune: Part Two, A Real Pain, and The Brutalist. The PGA’s Zanuck Award is often a predictor of the Academy Award for Best Picture, having matched the Oscar winner 16 out of the last 21 years.
This win caps off a week of celebrations for the best in film and TV producing, including victories for Shōgun, Hacks, and Baby Reindeer in their respective television categories. Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story was named the best documentary, and The Wild Robot won Outstanding Animated Motion Picture.
Other highlights of the evening included honorary awards presented to Dana Walden, Taika Waititi, Lynda Obst and Paula Weinstein (posthumously), and Chris Meledandri for their exceptional contributions to the industry.
