A stampede at New Delhi railway station last night killed 18 people and injured 25 others. The incident happened around 9:30 PM at platforms 13 and 14, where a large crowd had gathered.
The stampede occurred due to two main reasons:
- The crowd was so packed that people struggled to breathe. Some fainted, causing panic and a rush.
- A train announcement led to confusion. A train was set to arrive at platform 16, but many mistakenly rushed to platform 13, leading to pushing and people falling.
Railway spokesperson Dilip Kumar said that passengers from the Prayagraj Express and Magadh Express were at the station. Many believed it was the last train of the night and hurried to board, which led to the chaos.
The injured were taken to Lok Nayak Hospital. The hospital’s chief administrator, Ritu Saxena, told BBC Hindi that 15 people had died there, but other sources reported 18 deaths.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, and Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw expressed their condolences and wished the injured a quick recovery.
