Automattic’s Beeper Launches New iOS and Desktop Apps in Beta

After acquiring Beeper for $125 million last year, WordPress.com owner Automattic is now rolling out the first beta versions of its newly redesigned iOS and desktop apps. This update follows Beeper’s merger with Texts.com, another messaging platform previously acquired by Automattic.

In a recent blog post, Beeper revealed that the new desktop app has been built on the foundation of Texts.com’s technology, while the iOS version has been developed from scratch. The company claims these revamped apps offer improved speed and efficiency, consuming less battery power than before.

Texts.com founder Kishan Bagaria assured users on X that they can continue using the older app for now, with a seamless migration option planned for the future. At present, Beeper Cloud handles message storage and authentication for various services, but upcoming updates will transition all data to on-device storage, enhancing privacy and security. Future versions will introduce on-device encryption and support for multiple accounts on the same messaging platform. Bagaria also hinted that Mac users will soon be able to send and receive iMessages through the app.

Beeper was originally founded by Eric Migicovsky, known for creating the Pebble smartwatch and his role as a partner at Y Combinator. Following the acquisition, Migicovsky led Beeper’s messaging operations, but last month, he announced his shift in focus toward reviving Pebble.
