Anora Sweeps 5 Oscars, Making History at the 97th Academy Awards

Anora dominated the 97th Academy Awards, taking home five Oscars, including the most coveted honor of the evening: Best Picture. Director Sean Baker made history by sweeping every category he was nominated for, winning Best Director, Best Film Editing, and Best Original Screenplay. With four Oscars for a single film, Baker now holds the record for the most Academy Awards won by a single film in one night.

Baker’s victory is notable not only for the number of awards but also for its historical significance. He became the first filmmaker to win four Oscars for one movie, surpassing Bong Joon Ho’s achievement with Parasite, which won Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best International Feature. However, the Oscar for Best International Feature is awarded to the country, not the director, meaning South Korea received the honor for Parasite.

In his Best Director acceptance speech, Baker took the opportunity to advocate for the continued importance of theatrical film releases. “Distributors, please focus first and foremost on the theatrical releases of your films. Parents, introduce your children to feature films in movie theaters and you will be molding the next generation of movie lovers and filmmakers,” he said. “Let’s keep the great tradition of the moviegoing experience alive and well.”

Baker’s achievement echoes a historical milestone from 1953, when Walt Disney won four Oscars in a single night, but for four different films. Disney’s wins included Best Documentary Feature, Best Documentary Short Subject, Best Cartoon Short Subject, and Best Two-Reel Short Subject.

In addition to Baker’s triumph, Mikey Madison earned the Oscar for Best Actress for her role in Anora, overcoming stiff competition from Demi Moore, who was seen as the frontrunner for The Substance. Madison’s win at 25 years, 11 months, and 8 days made her the 9th youngest Best Actress winner in Academy history and the second actor born in the 90s to take home the award, following Jennifer Lawrence.

Anora had a remarkable night, cementing its place in Oscar history with a sweep that included both critical acclaim and recognition from the Academy.
