A detainee sent to prison for failing to pay a court-ordered bail of NPR 25,000 has passed away.
Jit Bahadur Dewan, also known as Jetha, a 38-year-old resident of Pathari Shanishchare Municipality-4 in Morang, died after being unable to pay the bail amount set by the Morang District Court.
According to Morang Prison, Dewan was admitted to Koshi Hospital on Falgun 29 after experiencing immobility in his limbs. He passed away on Saturday afternoon during treatment.
Dewan had been arrested by the police and charged with criminal mischief for allegedly setting fire to his own house.
On Mangsir 23, the Morang District Court had ordered his release on bail of NPR 25,000 for further legal proceedings. However, as he was unable to pay the required amount, he was sent to prison. His case was still pending a final verdict.
