The 2025 Formula 1 season started with an action-packed Australian Grand Prix. Lando Norris kept his cool in tough conditions to win the race, finishing just ahead of world champion Max Verstappen. Mercedes driver George Russell took third place in a race full of crashes and safety car interruptions.
The wet Albert Park circuit caused trouble from the very beginning. RB rookie Isack Hadjar, Alpine’s Jack Doohan, and last year’s winner, Williams’ Carlos Sainz, all crashed before finishing the first lap. Hadjar even hit the wall on the formation lap and had to retire before the race started.
Norris Stays Strong
Norris, who started from pole position, stayed in front at the start and managed his lead well. Verstappen was right behind him but made a mistake on lap 18, allowing Oscar Piastri to overtake him. The McLaren drivers built a strong lead before another safety car on lap 34 changed the race.
All teams used the safety car period to change tyres. Norris and Piastri switched to hard tyres, while Verstappen chose mediums. After the restart, Norris pulled ahead again, but Piastri made a mistake and lost positions.
Verstappen’s Late Push
Another safety car came out when Red Bull’s Liam Lawson spun, setting up a seven-lap sprint to the finish. Verstappen pushed hard to overtake Norris, but the McLaren driver held his position to claim his fifth career win and second in a row after his victory in Abu Dhabi last season.
“It was amazing, a tough race, especially with Max behind me. The last two laps were stressful, but I managed to stay ahead,” Norris said after the race.
