Jaya Bachchan recently made headlines for criticizing the title of Akshay Kumar’s 2017 film Toilet: Ek Prem Katha. During a discussion at the India TV Conclave, she mocked the name, calling it “a flop.” Her comments quickly caught the attention of fans, many of whom defended the movie for its powerful social message.
“I would never watch a film with such a title,” Jaya Bachchan remarked. “Toilet Ek Prem Katha, is this even a title? How many of you would go to watch a movie with a name like this?” she continued, asking the audience.
When only a few raised their hands in response, she added, “Among so many people, only four want to watch it. That’s really sad. This film is a flop.”
Fans Defend the Film’s Success
Her comments did not go unnoticed, with social media users quickly defending the film. One netizen pointed out the movie’s impressive box office performance, saying, “Jaya Bachchan says nobody will watch films with names like Toilet Ek Prem Katha or Padman. Yet, Toilet Ek Prem Katha earned 216 crore and Padman 191 crore, far more than some of Abhishek Bachchan’s movies.” They also reminded her that Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya’s husband, starred in Piku, a film where the theme of toilets was a prominent topic.
The debate continues, with fans standing up for the film’s message about sanitation and social change, proving that impactful storytelling can transcend unconventional titles.
