A Minecraft Movie, based on the popular video game, will hit theaters on April 4, 2025. But why is the title not “The Minecraft Movie”? Director Jared Hess and Mary Parent, the chairman of Legendary’s worldwide production, have explained the reason.
Why Not “The Minecraft Movie”?
Unlike many video game adaptations, the creators of A Minecraft Movie chose to call it “A Minecraft Movie” instead of “The Minecraft Movie.” According to Parent, this decision respects the fact that the original Minecraft game doesn’t have a fixed storyline. Minecraft is more about creative world-building than following a set narrative.
Hess added that there are endless possibilities for stories in the Minecraft world. He wanted to avoid presenting the film as the “official” story and instead focused on telling one of many possible adventures.
Not the Official Story
“We’re calling it A Minecraft Movie because we’re respecting the fact that there’s no one story that drives the game,” said Parent.
Hess further explained, “We’re not the official story. We’re not canonizing anything. We’re just one of a zillion stories.”
How Will the Movie Do?
Fans are curious if A Minecraft Movie will succeed. Some video game films, like The Super Mario Bros. Movie and the Sonic the Hedgehog films, have been big hits, while others, like Borderlands, did not perform as well.
Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer shared that lessons from previous video game movies, such as Halo and Fallout, are helping them improve. Spencer is confident that as they continue to learn, they’ll see more success with future projects.
Visuals That Look Straight from the Game
The visuals in A Minecraft Movie stay true to the game’s look, even though some people have criticized them. Parent explained that Minecraft’s quirky and absurd world makes it the perfect setting for the film to embrace these fun, over-the-top elements.
“There are many things about Minecraft itself that are absurd. It’s part of what makes it so fun — whether it’s piglins or llamas,” Parent said. “Tone was everything, and we felt like Jared was uniquely qualified to understand the tone and to help us take this journey.”
