Helen Mirren has always been known for speaking her mind, and her recent comments about the James Bond franchise are no exception. The legendary Oscar-winning actress, currently starring alongside former 007 Pierce Brosnan in the new series MobLand, made it clear that she’s never been a fan of the iconic spy films – despite her admiration for the actors who have played the famous agent.
In an interview with The Standard, Mirren explained her long-held distaste for the franchise, citing the way women have been portrayed throughout the series as a major issue. While she has great respect for Pierce Brosnan, who played Bond from 1995 to 2002, and Daniel Craig, who wrapped up his tenure as the British spy in No Time to Die (2021), she emphasized that the overall tone of the Bond series never resonated with her.
Mirren, whose late cousin Tania Mallet appeared as a Bond girl in 1964’s Goldfinger, expressed her love for both Brosnan and Craig, calling Brosnan “one of the nicest people you’ll ever have the pleasure to work with.” Still, when it comes to the films themselves, she admitted, “The whole series of James Bond, it was not my thing.”
Helen Mirren Slams Bond for “Profound Sexism”
A major sticking point for Mirren is how female characters are treated in the Bond films. She explained that the series is “drenched and born out of profound sexism,” criticizing the way women have been often reduced to mere plot devices or romantic interests. Instead of following the Bond formula, Mirren suggested telling the stories of real women who were involved in espionage or resistance efforts during historical moments, highlighting their bravery and contributions.

With growing speculation about the future of the Bond franchise, including rumors of a female 007, Mirren made it clear that she would not support such a shift. She would prefer to see original stories that focus on real-life women who displayed exceptional courage in the face of danger, such as those involved in the French Resistance during World War II.
What’s Next for James Bond?
As the James Bond franchise heads in a new direction, fans are eagerly awaiting news of the next actor to take on the iconic role. While Aaron Taylor-Johnson is heavily rumored to be the next Bond, no official announcement has been made. Additionally, long-time producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson are stepping aside, with Amy Pascal and David Heyman taking over creative direction for the upcoming films.
MobLand, starring Mirren alongside Pierce Brosnan, is set to premiere on Paramount+ on March 30, 2025.
