Virat Kohli retirement stance remains firm

Indian cricket star Virat Kohli is reportedly standing firm on his decision to retire from Test cricket, despite repeated requests from the BCCI and selectors urging him to reconsider. According to multiple reports, the veteran batter has already informed the board about his plans and is unlikely to reverse his stance.

BCCI tries to persuade Kohli before England series

The Virat Kohli retirement update comes as India prepares for an important five-match Test series against England starting June 20. The selectors have been trying to convince Kohli to delay his decision and feature in the crucial series. However, as per a report in TOI, the 35-year-old remains firm.

“Kohli had informed the selectors two weeks ago about his desire to quit Tests. They tried to persuade him to play in the England series, but he is still firm on his stance,” a BCCI source told TOI.

The final decision is expected of Virat Kohli retirement to be announced around the time of the team selection meeting next week.

Kohli’s Test numbers and recent struggles

If the Virat Kohli retirement goes through, it will be a huge blow for India’s Test squad, especially after Rohit Sharma’s recent exit from the format. Kohli was expected to be a pillar in the upcoming England series thanks to his vast experience and leadership.

However, his recent Test performances have been below par. In the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, Kohli scored just 190 runs in nine innings. While he managed a century in the opening Test at Perth, his overall average in 2024 dropped to 24.52 across 19 innings with only 417 runs.

Leadership changes could follow

With Rohit Sharma retired and Virat Kohli retirement expected, India is eyeing a new Test leadership core. Youngster Shubman Gill is the frontrunner to lead the red-ball squad into the future, starting with the England tour. The series will also mark the beginning of the ICC World Test Championship 2025-27 campaign for both teams.

Kohli’s legacy in Test cricket

Virat Kohli’s retirement, if confirmed, will mark the end of a golden era in Indian Test cricket. Known for his passion and aggression, Kohli led India to memorable overseas wins and played a key role in transforming the team into a world-class red-ball side.

While fans and the board still hope for a change of heart, all signs currently point toward the end of an iconic Test career.
