Sri Lanka, 21 Dead

A tragic bus accident in Sri Lanka has killed 21 people and seriously injured 14 others. The bus was carrying about 70 Buddhist pilgrims when it fell off a cliff on Sunday morning.

The passengers were traveling from the holy site of Kataragama to Kurunegala city via the hilly area of Kotmale. Fifteen people died at the scene, while six others died later during treatment at the hospital.

Police say they are still investigating the cause of the accident.

Sri Lanka sees around 3,000 road accidents every year, and its roads are considered among the most dangerous in the world.

In April 2005, another major accident occurred when a train hit a bus crossing the railway in Polgahawela, killing 37 people. In March 2021, 13 passengers and the driver died in a bus crash in a place called Passara.

Officials have called Sunday’s accident one of the worst in the country’s history.
