Rapper Tory Lanez, whose real name is Daystar Peterson, was seriously injured after being stabbed multiple times in a California prison on Monday morning. The 32-year-old artist is currently serving a 10-year sentence for shooting fellow musician Megan Thee Stallion in 2020.

Who Is the Suspect?

Officials have now identified the suspect behind the attack as Santino Casio, a 41-year-old inmate serving a life sentence for murder. Casio has since been moved to “restricted housing” while an investigation is underway.

Casio was originally transferred to the California Correctional Institution in Tehachapi from Los Angeles County jail back in February 2004.

According to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR), Casio was sentenced for:

  • Second-degree murder
  • First-degree attempted murder
  • Use of a deadly weapon
  • Causing great bodily injury

He also has a history of violent behavior in prison. In 2008, he got an extra six years for stabbing another inmate, and in 2018, two more years were added for having a weapon in prison.

Details of the Attack on Tory Lanez

An Instagram post linked to Tory Lanez claimed that he was stabbed 14 times, including:

  • 7 times in the back
  • 2 times in the back of the head
  • 1 time in the face

The post also said Lanez suffered collapsed lungs but is now breathing on his own. Despite being in pain, he is said to be in good spirits and thankful to be alive.

Investigation Underway

The stabbing is being investigated by both the California Correctional Institute and the Kern County District Attorney’s Office. So far, authorities haven’t shared any clear motive behind the attack.

Why Is Tory Lanez in Prison?

Tory Lanez was sentenced in 2023 for the 2020 shooting of rapper Megan Thee Stallion (real name: Megan Pete). The incident happened after a pool party at Kylie Jenner’s mansion in Hollywood. Lanez was convicted on three felony gun charges, including:

  • Assault with a semi-automatic firearm
  • Carrying a loaded, unregistered firearm
  • Discharging a firearm with gross negligence

He is expected to serve the full 10-year sentence unless parole is granted early.
