Sanjay Gurung has been officially removed from his position as the President of the Lumbini Province Cricket Association. The decision came after a no-confidence motion against him was passed unanimously in a special general assembly held in Taulihawa on Saturday.
Unanimous No-Confidence Vote Ends Gurung’s Tenure
The motion was first registered on Chaitra 22, 2081, when Vice President Binay Rajbhandari submitted it to the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) with signatures from 31 representatives. Following CAN’s directive, the special general assembly was conducted where all 38 present members voted in favor of the motion—resulting in zero votes in Gurung’s support.
Reasons Behind Sanjay Gurung’s Removal
Sanjay Gurung was accused of mismanaging the association, engaging in financial irregularities, and ignoring the association’s official statutes. These issues prompted more than two-thirds of the members to initiate the no-confidence process.
Absence in Assembly and Vacant Positions
Out of 41 total representatives, Treasurer Rajesh Shakya has passed away, leaving one position vacant. Sanjay Gurung did not attend the assembly, and member Subash Timilsina was abroad. With Gurung’s removal, Vice President Binay Rajbhandari has taken over as Acting President.
New Leadership to Be Elected Soon
The special assembly also announced that a new general meeting will be held on Jestha 31 in Palpa to elect a permanent president and treasurer. Rajbhandari confirmed that the upcoming session aims to bring transparent and proactive leadership to Lumbini’s cricket structure.
Voices Call for Legal and Transparent Governance
Cricket officials from both central and provincial levels criticized Gurung’s unilateral decision-making and statute violations. They emphasized the need for disciplined governance and development of cricket in Lumbini.
Former minister and parliament member Surendra Raj Acharya inaugurated the assembly, stressing the importance of legal procedures and encouraging stronger provincial representation in cricket. Other speakers echoed the call for accountability and structure.
Community Backs the Change in Leadership
Local leaders and sports officials, including representatives from Kapilvastu Municipality and the sports council, urged adherence to laws and the association’s constitution. They expressed hope that this change would reinvigorate cricket in Lumbini.
