The prestigious Durand Cup 2025, Asia’s oldest football tournament, will begin on July 18 and continue until August 23, 2025, delivering over a month of high-octane football.

This year, the Durand Cup 2025 will be held in Kokrajhar, a district in Assam, which marks a historic moment for Indian football in the North East.

Kokrajhar takes center stage as host city

The Indian Armed Forces, in partnership with the All India Football Federation (AIFF), are organizing the 134th edition of the tournament. Kokrajhar, which previously served as a co-host in 2023, will now take full hosting duties.

The enthusiastic response from the local crowd and successful organization in previous years earned the district the honor. This aligns with the broader push to expand football’s presence in North East India — a region passionate about the sport.

Strong competition expected from ISL, I-League clubs

While the official list of participating teams is yet to be revealed, Durand Cup 2025 is expected to feature top Indian clubs from the Indian Super League (ISL), I-League, Services, and other domestic circuits.

NorthEast United FC to defend their title

Last year, NorthEast United FC won their maiden Durand Cup title after a dramatic penalty shootout against Mohun Bagan. With the memory of last year’s triumph still fresh, they’ll be eager to defend their crown when the tournament kicks off in July.

The Highlanders and the Mariners were tied 2-2 after 90 minutes. But missed penalties by Liston Colaco and Subhasish Bose handed the trophy to NorthEast United.

Tournament remains crucial for Indian football calendar

Durand Cup 2025 continues to be a key pre-season competition, helping teams prepare for the Indian football season ahead. Its historical relevance, coupled with rising competitiveness, has helped it stay relevant even in the modern era.

With Kokrajhar now gearing up for the football fest, this edition promises not just fierce matches but a celebration of Indian football’s deep-rooted legacy.
