BTS leader Kim Namjoon, popularly known as RM, has etched his name in the history books after securing the Favourite K-pop Artist award at the 2025 American Music Awards (AMAs). Although the rapper couldn’t attend the ceremony due to his ongoing military service in South Korea, he acknowledged the moment with heartfelt posts on Instagram.
A Historic Win for RM
RM’s win marks a monumental moment in K-pop history. He is now the first artist from the genre to clinch an AMA both as part of a group and as a solo act. In a tightly contested category, he triumphed over fellow nominees BLACKPINK’s Rosé, BTS’ Jimin, Stray Kids, and ATEEZ.
The official BTS Instagram page celebrated his victory with a message of gratitude: “Thank you for your love and support, #BTSARMY 💜.” Namjoon re-shared the post on his Stories and wrote, “Thank you @amas #ARMY 😘,” expressing his appreciation for the fans who powered his win.
Fans Flood Social Media with Love
The BTS ARMY was quick to react across platforms, especially Reddit, where emotions ran high. One fan commented, “Yaaaaayyyy!!! Congratulations RM! BTS Leader wins the first AMA K-pop award. Let’s go!!! Plus, RPWP was a masterpiece!” referring to Namjoon’s critically acclaimed solo album Right Place, Wrong Person.
Another fan wrote, “I’m so glad we were able to secure this for him. His album was so experimental that he might not get nominated in Korean award shows. He really deserves this.”
“Namjoon won!!!! His first solo Western award, and it’s fan-voted! That makes it even more special,” a comment read. Another added, “This is also the first time the AMAs introduced the K-pop category—and Joon took it! What a statement.”
Fans also praised RM for breaking boundaries in music. “He’s often snubbed because his style doesn’t fit the mainstream K-pop mold. But this win proves that his artistry speaks volumes,” said one Redditor.
Looking Ahead
Namjoon also shared a Yonhap News article about BTS’s upcoming military discharge in June. He captioned it, “It will be soon, seriously, soon,” hinting at his return to the public eye.
In 2024, RM released Right Place, Wrong Person, a genre-defying solo album that further established him as an individual creative force beyond BTS. Meanwhile, BTS made their own mark at the 2022 AMAs, winning Favorite Pop Duo or Group for a record-breaking fourth consecutive year.
As fans eagerly await BTS’s full reunion—RM, Suga, Jimin, V, and Jungkook are set to be discharged in June—this historic solo win serves as both a celebration of Namjoon’s artistry and a reminder of BTS’s enduring legacy.
