Director Prakash Jha has officially announced that the much-anticipated sequel to his acclaimed film Raajneeti is underway. Marking 15 years since the original release on June 4, Jha revealed that the project, tentatively titled Raajneeti 2, is currently in the scripting and casting phases.
Reflecting on the legacy of Raajneeti, Jha described the original film as a modern-day retelling of the Mahabharata set against the backdrop of Indian politics. The 2010 political thriller brought together a powerhouse cast including Ranbir Kapoor, Ajay Devgn, Arjun Rampal, Manoj Bajpayee, Nana Patekar, and Naseeruddin Shah. Its success was fueled by the director’s meticulous approach — notably casting 8,000 actors for a grand crowd scene to maintain authenticity.
Speaking to Hindustan Times, Jha said, “Politics is an ongoing journey, and the idea of Raajneeti 2 has always been in the pipeline. Though casting and shooting details are not finalized, the script is taking shape and the project is progressing steadily.” He also shared how the original film’s cast was drawn to the strength of the story, with actors eager to take on the challenge.
Raajneeti was co-written, directed, and produced by Prakash Jha, with a screenplay developed alongside Anjum Rajabali. The film was distributed by UTV Motion Pictures and Walkwater Media and depicted intense power struggles between rival political factions, mirroring the epic tale of the Mahabharata in a contemporary setting.
With Raajneeti 2 in development, fans can look forward to another gripping political saga, potentially featuring stars like Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif, as hinted by the director. The legacy continues, promising a fresh yet familiar dive into the intricate world of politics and power.
