Mumbai Police’s Economic Offences Wing (EOW) has questioned Bollywood actor Dino Morea twice as part of an ongoing probe into the alleged Rs 65 crore Mithi River desilting scam. On Friday, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) conducted extensive raids across more than 15 locations in Mumbai and Kerala. Among the properties searched were Dino Morea’s residence, the home of BMC Assistant Engineer Prashant Ramugade, and various contractors linked to the case.
The raids are tied to a money laundering investigation initiated under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), triggered by a complaint from the EOW. Officials are currently scrutinizing financial records and seized materials to track the movement of illicit funds. Dino Morea, who is known for his close ties with Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray, is now under intense scrutiny as investigators delve deeper.
Earlier in the case, the EOW registered charges against 13 individuals, including BMC officials and contractors. These accused are alleged to have facilitated fraudulent payments related to river cleaning contracts that were never executed between 2007 and 2021. Investigators suspect that tender processes for hiring specialised dredging equipment were manipulated to benefit select suppliers, leading to substantial losses for the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). The Mithi River, a critical waterway flowing through Mumbai into the Arabian Sea, has long faced challenges related to desilting and flooding.
