The sudden demise of actor Mukul Dev on May 23 in New Delhi has left the film and television industry stunned. As speculation mounted over the cause of his death, his brother, actor Rahul Dev, has now spoken out, clarifying the circumstances and remembering Mukul for the vibrant person he once was.
“He Wasn’t Depressed, Just Neglected Himself,” Says Rahul Dev
In an emotional interview with The Times of India, Rahul revealed that Mukul had been in the ICU for over eight days before passing away. While initial reports suggested he was battling depression, Rahul clarified that his brother’s deteriorating health was largely due to poor eating habits and a general neglect of his well-being.
“He had stopped eating entirely in the last four to five days,” Rahul shared. “It wasn’t depression, though he was lonely. He just lost interest in life. He would often reject work opportunities, and it showed that he wasn’t caring for himself.”
Life After Personal Losses
Rahul explained that Mukul moved to Delhi in 2019 to take care of their ailing father, who passed away the same year. The family suffered another blow when their mother passed in 2023. Since then, Mukul had grown increasingly reclusive, finding solace in writing but distancing himself from people and professional commitments.
“He missed his daughter terribly,” Rahul added. “Living alone, especially after both parents were gone, only deepened that void.”
Responding to Rumors and Industry Reactions
Following Mukul’s passing, many speculated that he was suffering from depression, a claim that Rahul firmly denies. He questioned the authenticity of those now speaking about his brother, stating, “Where were these people when he was in the hospital? Did they check in on him between 2019 and 2024?”
He pointed out that Mukul was still physically active, even participating in half-marathons. “Yes, he had gained weight, but that happens when you stop caring for yourself,” Rahul said.
Remembering Mukul: Beyond the Headlines
For Rahul, it’s important to preserve the memory of his brother as the charismatic, intelligent, and sensitive individual he truly was—not someone who simply faded away. “Mukul was more than how his story ended,” he reflected.
