A shocking case has emerged from Kailali where a police officer has been arrested for allegedly being involved in the suspicious death of a prisoner inside Dhangadhi Jail. The deceased, 28-year-old Haris Singh Pali from Bageshwar-5, Dadeldhura, was found unconscious near the jail bathroom and later died at Seti Provincial Hospital.
According to police, Sub-Inspector Harjeet Nath has been taken into custody for investigation based on a complaint filed by the victim’s family. Harjeet Nath was not just a police officer but also the complainant in the banking fraud case that led to Pali’s imprisonment. Pali had been sentenced to 10 days in jail and a fine of Rs. 200,000 by the District Court in Falgun 2080.
Pali’s wife, Janaki Saud, claims that her husband was brutally beaten inside the jail under Nath’s direction and murdered. She initially filed a complaint against five individuals, including the jail chief Basanta Bahadur Khatri, but was asked by police to revise the complaint. As a result, a formal complaint was registered only against Nath.
Pali was arrested on 29th Jestha and brought to Dhangadhi the next day. Due to Saturday closure, he was presented to court only on 1st Asar and immediately sent to the District Prison. On the night of 2nd Asar, around 10:30 PM, he was found unconscious and rushed to the hospital, where he was declared dead.
Visible injuries on Pali’s body have intensified suspicions of a planned murder. After police accepted the official complaint and detained SI Nath, the family agreed to receive the body for cremation. The post-mortem has been completed, and the body will be handed over to the family.
