Rani Mukerji opens up about her cold relationship with Aishwarya Rai

Bollywood actress Rani Mukerji has finally admitted that her relationship with fellow actress Aishwarya Rai has not been warm for quite some time. Although both stars once claimed everything was normal between them, Rani has now revealed that their bond had soured a long time ago.

It all started on ‘Koffee with Karan’

In a recent episode of Koffee with Karan, host Karan Johar intentionally brought up Aishwarya’s name while speaking with Rani. While Rani initially responded diplomatically, saying things are “normal,” she also hinted that Karan already knows the reason behind the strained relationship.

Karan pushed a little further, teasing with the words, “Chalte Chalte bata do,”—a sarcastic reference to the movie that many believe caused the fallout between the two actresses.

The real story behind the cold war

Rani Mukerji went on to explain that she has no personal issues with Aishwarya. “Maybe she has a problem with me,” Rani added, noting that Aishwarya has stopped calling her and they haven’t met at public events in a long time. Still, Rani said if they meet, she’ll behave respectfully.

Friendship turned rivalry

Both Rani and Aishwarya Rai were top actresses during the same era and were once seen as close friends in the media. Back then, Rani was romantically linked to Abhishek Bachchan, while Aishwarya was dating Salman Khan.

During the filming of Chalte Chalte, things reportedly turned sour between Aishwarya and Salman, leading to on-set drama. Eventually, Aishwarya was removed from the project—allegedly on Shah Rukh Khan’s decision—and Rani stepped into her role.

The love triangle that fueled the fire

That casting change is believed to have deeply hurt Aishwarya, who might have felt that Rani “took her role.” On the other hand, Rani possibly felt that Aishwarya later “took her man,” since Abhishek eventually broke up with Rani and married Aishwarya.

Rumors say that Abhishek’s mother, Jaya Bachchan, didn’t approve of Rani as a daughter-in-law, which led to the breakup. When Abhishek and Aishwarya got married, Rani wasn’t even invited to the wedding.

Decades-old gossip gets new life

Many believe Aishwarya Rai never forgave Rani for replacing her in Chalte Chalte, and Rani may have felt betrayed when Abhishek married Aishwarya. Their cold interactions over the years only fueled more gossip.

Now, with Rani finally shedding light on the matter during her interview with Karan Johar, the long-standing rumors about their rivalry have come back into the spotlight.
