Veteran actor Michael Madsen, widely regarded for his intense performances and frequent collaborations with filmmaker Quentin Tarantino, has died at the age of 67. The actor passed away following a cardiac arrest and was found unresponsive at his Malibu residence on Thursday morning, confirmed his publicist Liz Rodriguez.
In a joint statement, Madsen’s managers, Susan Ferris and Ron Smith of Bohemia Entertainment, along with Rodriguez, paid tribute to the late actor, calling him “one of Hollywood’s most iconic actors, who will be missed by many.” The Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department responded to the emergency call and confirmed that no foul play is suspected in his death.
Madsen rose to stardom with his unforgettable portrayal of the sadistic Mr. Blonde in Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs. He continued to be a staple in Tarantino’s filmography, appearing in Kill Bill, The Hateful Eight, and Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood. Outside of Tarantino’s universe, Madsen built a robust career with roles in major films such as Thelma & Louise, Donnie Brasco, Die Another Day, and Sin City.
Despite professional acclaim, Madsen faced personal turmoil in recent years. In 2022, he was arrested on suspicion of domestic battery and filed for divorce shortly after. He also dealt with multiple DUI charges over the last decade and endured the heartbreaking loss of his son, Hudson, who died by suicide in 2022.
Still, Madsen never wavered in his dedication to acting. At the time of his death, he was actively working on 18 film projects, including Resurrection Road, Concessions, and Cookbook for Southern Housewives. He was also preparing to release a poetry collection titled Tears For My Father: Outlaw Thoughts and Poems, showcasing a more introspective side of his creativity.
Reflecting on his own journey, Madsen once likened his career to a “heart monitor,” candidly embracing the highs and lows of the entertainment industry. His managers shared that he was optimistic about the future and eager to begin a new chapter with the work he had lined up.
