Nepal’s Wushu athlete Bijay Sinjali has been awarded a cash prize of NPR 6.5 million by the government for winning a bronze medal at the 3rd Taolu Wushu World Cup held in Japan last year.
The award was handed over during a special ceremony organized at the Prime Minister’s residence in Baluwatar on Wednesday.
Recognized under national sports policy
According to Schedule-4 (Ka), Clause 3 of the National Sports Development Regulation 2079, athletes winning bronze medals in global events like the International Federation’s (IF) World Championships are eligible for a reward of NPR 6.5 million. Bijay Sinjali’s achievement fulfilled this criterion.
He now joins the list of athletes who have received one of the highest cash rewards for a single medal in Nepal’s sports history. Earlier, para taekwondo athlete Palesha Govardhan also received NPR 6.5 million for winning bronze at the Paris Paralympics.
Bronze win at Taolu World Cup, Japan
Sinjali earned the bronze medal in the Cianshu category of the championship by scoring 9.636 points. His performance outshone competitors from countries like USA and Mexico, finishing third among 9 global participants.
