Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) has successfully installed a 390-watt solar panel at Tilicho Lake in Manang district to supply electricity in the high-altitude tourist area.
Tilicho Lake, located at an altitude of 4,949 meters above sea level, is a popular trekking destination in the Himalayas. As there are no nearby settlements around the lake, electricity is now being supplied using solar energy.
Tourists Can Now Charge Phones Easily
According to Raju Mahto, Chief of the NEA Manang Distribution Center, the installation of the solar panel has made it easier for both domestic and international tourists to charge their mobile phones during their visit to Tilicho.
“This is a great relief for trekkers who reach the lake after hours of walking,” said Mahto.
Power Already Available at Tilicho Base Camp
Tilicho Lake’s base camp, located in Khangsar, Ward No. 9 of Ngisyang Rural Municipality, already has access to the national power grid. A 50 A transformer supplies electricity there.
However, since it takes nearly three hours on foot to reach the lake from the base camp and there are no villages nearby, solar energy was seen as the most practical solution for electricity at the lake site itself.
