Chandra Barot, the celebrated filmmaker behind the iconic Bollywood film Don (1978), has passed away at the age of 86. He died on Sunday after battling pulmonary fibrosis for seven years. His wife, Deepa Barot, confirmed the news and shared that he had been under treatment at Guru Nanak Hospital. He was earlier admitted to Jaslok Hospital as well.
Barot is best remembered for directing Don, a film that went on to become a cult classic and inspired several remakes, including the Shah Rukh Khan-led version that stirred controversy in 2023. Before making his directorial debut, Barot worked as an assistant director on several notable films, including Purab Aur Pachhim (1970) with Manoj Kumar, Yaadgaar (1970), Shor (1972), and Roti Kapada Aur Makaan (1974).
After Don, he directed the Bengali film Aashrita in 1989, which grossed ₹3 crore. He also directed Pyar Bhara Dil in 1991. Unfortunately, a few of his projects like Neil Ko Pakadna…Impossible and Hong Kong Wali Script never saw the light of day.
Chandra Barot’s contribution to Indian cinema, especially through Don, remains unmatched. His storytelling and vision continue to influence generations of filmmakers and audiences alike.
