Due to ongoing heavy rainfall in the hilly regions, the Koshi River has recorded its highest water flow of the year on Sunday, raising concerns among authorities and locals alike.
Flow reaches nearly 1.9 lakh cusecs
As measured at 2 PM on Sunday, the water flow in the river surged to 189,390 cusecs per second, according to Saptari’s Chief District Officer Bhola Dahal. He added that the water level is still rising, and further increases are expected if the rain continues upstream.
Red alert raised, 26 gates opened
In response to the high flow, red flags and warning lights have been activated at the Koshi Barrage to signal potential danger. Authorities have also opened 26 gates of the barrage to manage the pressure of the increased water volume.
Officials are closely monitoring the situation, as rising water levels in the Koshi have historically led to devastating floods in nearby lowland areas. Residents living along the riverbanks have been urged to stay alert.
