A1 Crash Update: Five Hospitalized After Serious Early Morning Collision

A1 Crash: Five people were rushed to hospital after a major collision occurred on the A1 northbound near Denton in the early hours of April 9. The A1 Crash , which took place just before 2:30 AM, involved multiple vehicles including several police cars and a grey car that was found flipped on its side near the central reservation.

Emergency services, including police, ambulance crews, and fire fighters, responded promptly to the A1 Crash scene. The North East Ambulance Service confirmed they dispatched five ambulance crews, a specialist paramedic, a duty officer, and teams from the Hazardous Area Response Team (HART). Support was also provided by the Great North Air Ambulance Service, which attended by road.

A total of five individuals were transported to hospital for treatment. The extent of their injuries has not yet been disclosed. As of this morning, the A1 remains closed between Swalwell and Denton, leading to heavy delays for commuters during rush hour.

Photos from the crash site show significant damage to vehicles and debris scattered across the carriageway. Police investigators are currently at the scene, using yellow evidence markers as they examine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Northumbria Police stated that the collision occurred near the Derwent Haugh Road junction in Gateshead and confirmed that a full investigation is underway. The cause of the crash remains unknown at this time.
