Renowned Kannada film industry actress Ranya Rao has been arrested in connection with a gold smuggling case. She was taken into custody at Bengaluru International Airport on charges of gold smuggling.
Ranya’s stepfather, K. Ramachandra Rao, is an IPS officer in Karnataka. According to reports, she came under police scrutiny after making four trips to Dubai within 15 days.
Indian media sources have reported that authorities seized 14.8 kg of gold from Ranya at Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru on Monday night.
According to PTI, officials stated that the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) made the arrest. Following her detention, Ranya was presented before an economic offenses court, which sent her to judicial custody for 14 days.
Ranya is well-known for her role opposite Kannada superstar Sudeep in the 2014 film Manikya. She has also acted in several other South Indian films.
Authorities are investigating whether she was operating alone or if she was part of a larger smuggling network between Dubai and India.
The 33-year-old actress is the stepdaughter of senior Karnataka IPS officer K. Ramachandra Rao, who serves as the Director General of Police (DGP) at the Karnataka State Police Housing Corporation.
Ranya arrived at Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport on an Emirates flight from Dubai. Due to her frequent international travel, she was under surveillance.
