The strike called by identity activists in protest against the construction of the cable car in Pathibhara has had a minor impact. The inter-party struggle committee for Mukumlung conservation had called for a strike in nine districts of eastern Arun for today and tomorrow, but its effect on the first day has been minimal.
According to the police, passenger vehicles have not operated on highways since Sunday morning. Koshi Province Police spokesperson Bhim Dahal stated that the strike has had an impact in Taplejung, while its effect in other districts has been limited. “Some protesters have taken to the streets,” he said. “Some transport services are still operating.”
The strike has had a greater impact on the East-West Highway and Mechi Highway, where passenger buses have not been operating. Protesters have gathered at major intersections.
The strike was called in nine districts of eastern Arun (Jhapa, Morang, Sunsari, Tehrathum, Sankhuwasabha, Taplejung, Ilam, and Panchthar) with demands including the cancellation of the cable car construction decision, the release of detained leaders and activists from the protests, a judicial investigation into the Mukumlung shooting incident, and the withdrawal of security forces deployed by the Kafle Party.
A week ago, there was a clash between the police and protesters in Baludada, Pathibhara. In the clash, 26 people, including 21 police officers, were injured. Two individuals were shot by the police.
