Sri Lanka’s experienced all-rounder Angelo Mathews has announced his retirement from Test cricket. He confirmed that the upcoming first Test against Bangladesh next month will be his last match in the longest format of the game.
On his official social media, Mathews shared an emotional message saying goodbye to Test cricket, a format he has deeply cherished for 17 years. “Playing cricket for Sri Lanka has been my greatest honor and pride. Wearing the national jersey brought me unmatched feelings of patriotism and service,” he wrote.
Angelo Mathews has given his all to cricket, and in return, the sport has shaped him into the person he is today. Over his career, he has played 118 Test matches, scoring 8,167 runs at an impressive average of 44.62. His record includes 16 centuries and 45 half-centuries.
In his heartfelt message, Mathews also expressed gratitude to his fans, family, and everyone who supported him throughout his ups and downs. “I want to thank God, my parents, my wife and children, family, and friends who always believed in me and stood by me,” he said. He also thanked Sri Lanka Cricket and all his coaches for their continuous support.
Though this chapter ends, Mathews promises his love for cricket will never fade. The first Test against Bangladesh in June will mark his final appearance in Test cricket.
Sri Lanka Starts New World Test Championship Cycle Against Bangladesh
Sri Lanka will kick off the new World Test Championship (WTC) cycle with a series against Bangladesh. In the previous 2023-25 WTC cycle, Sri Lanka played 13 Tests, winning five and losing eight, finishing sixth in the points table.
Bangladesh, on the other hand, secured four wins in 12 matches, placing seventh in the same cycle.
This series will be a significant moment not just for the teams but also for Mathews, as he bids farewell to Test cricket after a remarkable career.
