Nepali filmmaker Deepak Rauniyar believes that India has a huge market for Nepali movies. He stated that the similarities in language, religion, and culture make India a natural market for Nepali cinema.
To tap into this potential, Rauniyar has brought renowned Bollywood director and actor Anurag Kashyap on board as the executive producer for his latest film, Rajagunj.
“India is a big market for Nepali films due to our shared cultural connections,” Rauniyar said during a recent press interaction in Kathmandu. “That’s why we decided to collaborate with Anurag—to explore ways to expand Nepali cinema in India.”
A Long-Awaited Collaboration
Rauniyar and Kashyap first met in 2016 during a screening of Rauniyar’s film White Sun in Singapore. Since then, they have discussed working together, and Rajagunj marks their first official collaboration.
Rauniyar also hinted at future projects with Kashyap, saying, “We are in talks about working together again.”
‘Rajagunj’ Set for Nepali Release
After making rounds at major international film festivals, Rajagunj is finally set for its theatrical release in Nepal on Chaitra 1. Rauniyar shared that the film tells a story close to his heart, emphasizing that he did not let market pressures influence his creative vision.
About Rajaganj
The movie is based on real events from the Madhes movement in 2015, which followed Nepal’s new constitution announcement. Rajagunj revolves around a police operation to rescue a kidnapped parliament member and the son of a school principal amidst the turmoil of the protests.

The film features a strong ensemble cast, including Asha Magrati, Dayahang Rai, Bijay Baral, Richa Sharma, Pashupati Rai, former Miss Nepal Nikita Chandak, Gaumaya Gurung, Pushpa Yadav, Aarti Mandal, Ghanshyam Mishra, Parmeshwar Kumar Jha, and Neeraj Shrestha.
Produced by Aadi Films (Deepak Rauniyar and Asha Magrati), Basuri Films (Rambabu Gurung and Maniram Pokharel), actor Dayahang Rai, and Alan R. Milligan from Ten Thousand Gates, Rajagunj is set to be jointly distributed in Nepal by Tipilk and Venkatesh Entertainment.
