Anurag Kashyap, a well-known director, has expressed his disappointment with Bollywood and even mentioned that he is considering moving to the South Indian film industry to make his movies. In a recent interview with Forbes, he shared how watching films in Indian theatres has ruined his experience, so he prefers watching movies at film festivals.
He talked about the current state of the film industry and stressed that more independent filmmakers should be given a chance. Anurag shared his thoughts on the future of independent films, saying, “I’ve stopped thinking about the future. I can only talk about the problems I face or the issues that other filmmakers face, and about the solutions I can find. But I can’t predict what’s coming next. There are new things, like short films. I wanted to make films because I love watching them on the big screen. But now, I watch films at festivals because I hate the interruptions like intervals and people talking about how bad something is for your health. It ruins the experience of watching a movie.”
He also spoke about his love for cinema and how he plans to keep making films no matter what. “If everything fails, I’ll go back to where I started—from the day I came to the city with a suitcase, wanting to make films. But I won’t go further back. I love cinema deeply, and that won’t change. I know I want to make films for the rest of my life. Along the way, I have supported other filmmakers with unique voices. The more new voices there are, the easier it will be for me to make films. When I started, there was no platform for filmmakers like me.”
Anurag’s last film, Kennedy, was praised at the Cannes Film Festival, but it has not been released in India. Since then, he has not directed a film but has acted in a few, including Leo, Maharaja, and Viduthalai Part 2.
