In a fresh start for the Gujarat Giants, Australian all-rounder Ashleigh Gardner has been named the new captain for the upcoming season of the Women’s Premier League (WPL). This announcement, made on February 5, marks a significant change for the team after two tough seasons. Gardner takes over from her Australian teammate, Beth Mooney, who will step away from captaincy duties.
The Gujarat Giants have faced challenges in recent seasons, finishing at the bottom of the standings in both years. Despite the team’s struggles, Gardner has been one of their key performers, contributing 324 runs and taking 17 wickets. Her all-around abilities have been a standout feature for the franchise, and now she’s eager to lead the team in what they hope will be a turning point.
Gardner shared her excitement about stepping into the leadership role, saying, “I’m thrilled to be named captain of Gujarat Giants. It’s a privilege to lead such a talented group of players. With a mix of youth and experience, as well as a strong presence of Indian talent in the squad, I’m confident that we can build a team that will make our fans proud.”
Head coach Michael Klinger also expressed his confidence in Gardner’s leadership, calling her a fierce competitor with excellent game awareness. “Ashleigh brings a tactical edge and the ability to motivate her teammates. She is the perfect choice to lead Gujarat Giants, and we believe she will guide us towards success in the upcoming season,” he said.
While Mooney is stepping down from the captaincy, she will still play a key role in the team. Klinger confirmed that Mooney would focus on wicketkeeping duties and opening the batting, continuing to bring leadership through her performances on the field.
“I’d like to thank Mooney for her valued leadership. With her now focusing on batting and wicketkeeping, she’ll remain an important leader in our group,” Klinger added.
In preparation for the new season, the Giants made several moves, including acquiring four new players in the December auction. Indian all-rounder Simran Shaikh joined the team, alongside the retention of star player Deandra Dottin. These changes signal a renewed focus as the team aims to turn things around and show their true potential in the next WPL season.
