Assam Flood and Landslide Crisis Over 1,200 Villages Submerged, 12 Dead

Assam is facing a severe flood and landslide situation as over 1,254 villages in 22 districts have been submerged. In the past four days, the death toll has reached 12, according to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority.

Heavy damage has been reported in the districts of Sribhumi, Cachar, Hailakandi, Lakhimpur, and Nagaon. In just the last 24 hours, two more people lost their lives due to drowning.

With the crisis worsening, Prime Minister Narendra Modi contacted Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday to assess the damage and promised full support from the central government.

More than 2 lakh people have been affected by the floods and landslides since the evening of June 2. Around 32,000 homes have been completely submerged, leaving many families homeless.

To shelter those displaced, the local administration has set up 322 relief camps across affected areas.

Non-stop rain for the past five days has triggered disasters across several northeastern Indian states. Besides Assam, the worst-hit states include Mizoram, Manipur, Tripura, and Arunachal Pradesh.
