A stampede at the ongoing Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, has reportedly resulted in multiple casualties.

According to Indian media reports, at least 10 people lost their lives in the stampede that occurred last night. However, a doctor from Prayagraj City, speaking to news agency AFP on the condition of anonymity, claimed that the death toll had reached 15.

Indian media outlet Dainik Bhaskar reported that 14 people had died and more than 50 were injured. Citing its correspondent, the report mentioned that 14 bodies had already been brought to Swaroop Rani Hospital for post-mortem examination.

While different sources have provided varying figures on the death toll, there has been no official statement from government authorities yet.

Following the incident, the Amrit Snan (holy bath) has been temporarily suspended.

The Maha Kumbh Mela, which began on January 13, has reportedly seen around 150 million people take a holy dip in the Ganges so far. On this Wednesday’s Mauni Amavasya, it was estimated that over 100 million devotees would participate in the ritual at the Kumbh Mela.

However, on Tuesday night, a sudden stampede broke out at the Sangam area in Prayagraj. Many people were trampled to death in the massive crowd. In response, local authorities removed barricades and opened the roads to control the situation.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi contacted Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to gather information about the incident.

Following this, CM Yogi Adityanath urged devotees not to rush towards the Sangam area but to perform their holy bath wherever they were along the Ganges. He also requested people to follow administrative instructions and not believe in rumors.
