Barcelona lost to Dortmund in the away leg of quarterfinal but managed to qualify for the semis.

Barcelona have made it to the UEFA Champions League semi-final for the first time since 2019. It has been a tough six years for the club. Financial issues forced them to let go of their greatest player, Lionel Messi. Club legend Xavi was brought in to rebuild the team but was sacked after two years and seven months. On top of that, financial fair play rules made it hard to sign star players. Now, finally, Barcelona look strong again.

Hansi Flick Brings New Hope to the Club

When Barcelona hired German coach Hansi Flick, not many expected big results so soon. But Flick has quickly changed the team’s playing style and brought back belief. Barcelona are now in the race for a treble — the Champions League, La Liga, and Copa del Rey. They currently lead the Spanish league by four points and will face rivals Real Madrid in the Copa del Rey final. Winning all three would be their third treble in history.

Champions League Is the Real Test

Despite the improvements, Barcelona need to win the Champions League to prove they are back among Europe’s top teams. Their last semi-final ended in heartbreak when Liverpool knocked them out in 2019. Now, they’ve reached the final four once again. They will face the winner of the match between Inter Milan and Bayern Munich, two strong and experienced teams.

Quarter-Final Win Over Dortmund Wasn’t Easy

Barcelona beat Borussia Dortmund 5-3 on aggregate to reach the semi-final. They had a strong 4-0 lead from the first leg, but the return match in Germany was tense. In the second leg, Dortmund scored early and made it 2-0 just after halftime. This brought back painful memories of past seasons when Barcelona lost big leads in knockout matches.

Bad Memories of Past Comebacks Returned

Barcelona fans were reminded of past collapses. In 2018, they lost to Roma after leading in the first leg. A year later, it happened again against Liverpool. In this match, Dortmund scored quickly, and it looked like history might repeat itself. But an own goal by Ramy Bensebaini helped calm the nerves. Dortmund still scored again, winning the match 3-1, but Barcelona advanced with a 5-3 total score.

Attackers Struggle in Germany

Barcelona’s front three – Robert Lewandowski, Raphinha, and Lamine Yamal – had a poor night in Germany. Their passes didn’t connect, and they looked out of sync. The big first-leg lead allowed them to relax slightly, but that attitude nearly caused trouble. If they play like this in the next round, it could cost them.

Problems in Midfield and Defence

In midfield, Pedri started on the bench and only came on after 59 minutes. His absence made it hard to control the game. Hansi Flick also rested Inigo Martinez, who had a yellow card from the first leg. Left-back Alejandro Balde was missing too, and his replacement Gerard Martin could not provide the same attacking support.

Lamine Yamal Not at His Best

Seventeen-year-old Lamine Yamal has impressed this season, but he struggled in this game. His crosses and passes in the final third were often off-target, and he lost possession several times. Raphinha also had a quiet match, missing key chances that could have sealed the win earlier.

Next Round Will Be Much Tougher

Whether Barcelona face Inter Milan or Bayern Munich in the next round, the challenge will be much harder. Both teams have strong records in the Champions League and know how to win big matches. Barcelona will need to be sharp in both legs of the semi-final.

Lewandowski Urges Team to Improve

After the game, Lewandowski admitted that the team must learn from this match. He said, “We need to study this game. We made mistakes, and we can’t repeat them in the next round. If we are going to lose, better to do it now and fix the problems.”

Barcelona Must Stay Focused to Keep UCL Dream Alive

Barcelona are close to reaching the Champions League final, but they must stay focused. Mistakes like those against Dortmund could be very costly in the next round. To keep their UCL dream alive, they need to play their best football and show why they are one of Europe’s top clubs again.
