Bear Attack in Bajhang

A woman was seriously injured in a bear attack while collecting firewood in a forest.

The victim, 28-year-old Ankira Rokaya from Khaptad Chhanna Rural Municipality-4, was attacked by a bear in Bedubhuwa forest, located in Ward No. 5 of the same municipality, on Wednesday morning.

Subhash Rokaya, Ankira’s nephew, said she suffered deep wounds on different parts of her body. She was rescued with the help of other women and a dog who were also in the forest. “If the others and the dog hadn’t been there, it would have been difficult to find her alive,” Subhash shared. The bear fled after the commotion and the dog’s intervention.

Due to the severity of her injuries, Ankira was referred to Kathmandu for further treatment after initial care at Bajhang District Hospital.

Locals reported spotting three bears in the area about 20 days ago. The frequent bear attacks have left residents fearful of entering the forest for firewood and grass.
