England Test captain Ben Stokes is all set to return to action as an all-rounder when his team kicks off a crucial summer with a four-day Test match against Zimbabwe at Trent Bridge, starting May 22. The match will serve as a warm-up ahead of the high-stakes five-Test series against India.
Ben Stokes Recovered and Raring to Go
Ben Stokes has been out of the game since suffering a torn left hamstring during England’s final Test in New Zealand in December 2024. He underwent surgery in January and has since worked hard to regain full fitness.
“I feel great,” Stokes told Sky Sports. “Training is one thing, but playing a match is a different challenge. You can’t replicate match intensity during training. I’m excited to be back on the field, but I know it will be different.”
Back to His All-Round Role
Stokes made it clear he’s aiming to return to his usual role—bowling full pace and batting at number six.
“My goal is to dominate with both bat and ball like I’ve done in the past. I’m confident I can get back to that level,” he said.
Fitter Than Ever Before
The England skipper also revealed that this recovery period has made him fitter than ever.
“My approach to injuries is to come back stronger and fitter than before. I’ve put in a lot of work on both my cricket skills and physical fitness. I believe I’m in the best shape of my career right now,” he added.
Clear Communication with Coach McCullum
Stokes also shared that he has been in regular talks with head coach Brendon McCullum about managing his workload and staying on the field consistently.
“I’m 33 now, and I want to avoid unnecessary time off the field. Baz (McCullum) and I have spoken a lot about how he can support me better. We’ve worked together for a while and know each other well. The conversations we’ve had recently have been really helpful,” he said.
