Netflix Launches ‘Better Late Than Single,’ a Dating Reality Show for Lifelong Singles’ First Love

Netflix is set to premiere a new dating reality series titled Better Late Than Single, which follows the heartfelt journey of lifelong singles experiencing love for the very first time. These participants, with no prior dating experience, take on the challenge of navigating their initial romantic encounters, gradually developing genuine emotions along the way.

The show features a unique team of dating coaches known as the “Spark Makers” — singer Seo In Guk, musician Car, the Garden, broadcaster Lee Eun Ji, and actress Kang Han Na. Rather than simply observing, these mentors actively engage with the participants, offering insightful advice rooted in a deep understanding of their emotions and personalities.

Kang Han Na expressed how authentic the program felt, emphasizing its focus on lifelong singles. She admitted that she became unexpectedly invested in the participants’ journeys, genuinely hoping they would overcome their single status and find love.

On July 3rd, Netflix hosted a production press event for ‘Better Late Than Single’ at CGV Yongsan I’Park Mall in Seoul. Alongside the Spark Makers, directors Jo Wook Hyung, Kim No Eun, and Won Seung Jae were present to discuss the show.

Spanning six weeks, the series documents the transformation of lifelong singles as they learn to express love and build relationships. The casting process was highly competitive, with around 4,000 applicants vying for a spot. The focus of the show extends beyond physical makeovers, delving into the participants’ speech, behavior, and emotional responses to nurture their inner growth.

Seo In Guk highlighted how even simple changes, like switching from sweatpants to a suit, can affect one’s confidence and body language. Stylists were brought in to help participants boost their self-esteem. The show also introduces distinctive elements, including a one-night, two-day overnight date. Director Jo wondered if the lifelong singles would accept such an intimate challenge but noted it led to many memorable and fun moments.

As the show progresses, viewers witness participants gradually revealing their true feelings—some experiencing love confessions for the first time, while others face emotional obstacles, sometimes shedding tears. The production team captures these candid, awkward, and often unpredictable moments, showcasing the hesitation and vulnerability of individuals unsure of what to say or how to act.

The Spark Makers found the experience deeply moving. Car, the Garden reflected on his own awkward first love, recalling the little white lies he once told to make a good impression. Lee Eun Ji shared how watching participants’ happiness from small gestures reminded her of what early love feels like, including moments of anger or clinginess. Kang Han Na laughed at some participants’ candid talks about getting married in the future, recognizing the purity of their hearts and reminiscing about her own youthful innocence.

Director Won Seung Jae described the show as not just sparking love but chronicling the entire first-love experience. He encouraged audiences to support the lifelong singles taking these brave first steps.

‘Better Late Than Single’ will release episodes in staggered batches: episodes 1 to 3 on July 8, episodes 4 to 6 on July 15, episodes 7 and 8 on July 22, and episodes 9 and 10 on July 29.

What distinguishes this series from other dating shows is the proactive role of the Spark Makers. They meet regularly with participants to understand their unique traits and provide personalized guidance, making their involvement central to the show’s heartfelt narrative.

Lee Eun Ji described her role as rewarding, likening it to a parent-teacher meeting where she became emotionally connected to the participants, sometimes feeling like a guardian to younger siblings or children. Their honest yet playful feedback made the experience even more meaningful.

Car, the Garden confessed he usually struggles with dating advice but found a personal connection here, having started dating later in life himself. He also shared a quirky tidbit about a participant who works at an arms company and is known for having a huge appetite—a first for any dating show. He invited viewers to watch closely.

Overall, ‘Better Late Than Single’ promises a sincere, heartfelt look at first love, celebrating the courage of lifelong singles as they step into the world of romance for the first time.
