Bhupendra Gurung: The Nepali Kung-Fu Warrior Who Conquered the World

Bhupendra Gurung was born in June 1988 in Doodhpokhari-06, Dandathok, Lamjung, Nepal. From a young age, he had a strong interest in martial arts. Inspired by Bruce Lee’s movies, he started training in Kung-fu at the age of eight in his school. Seeing his exceptional skills and dedication, his Master, Animesh Lal Shrestha, provided him with extra classes at a Kung-fu club.

Rise to Prominence

Under the guidance of Master Animesh Lal Shrestha at Wuma Kung-fu Nepal, Gurung quickly moved up the ranks. He achieved the following Black Belt levels:

  • 1st Dan Black Belt in April 2010
  • 2nd Dan Black Belt in July 2011
  • 3rd Dan Black Belt in March 2018
  • 4th Dan Black Belt in February 2025

Through national and international competitions, he became known for his speed, precision, and powerful techniques.

World Championship Success

The peak of Gurung’s career came in 2018 when he won a Gold medal at the 12th World Martial Arts Games in Germany. He competed in the Forms Division SS+18 Male category, defeating top athletes from around the world.

Recently, in 2025, he won two Gold medals for Nepal in the Battle of the Dragon World Championships held in New Jersey, USA.

Impact and Legacy

Beyond competitions, Gurung has worked to promote Kung-fu and indigenous sports in Nepal. He inspires young martial artists through coaching, seminars, and motivational talks. He also organizes martial arts events and supports youth programs, encouraging sportsmanship and discipline.
