Box Office: Sinners Earns USD 48M, Sets Post-COVID Horror Record

The box office just witnessed a major shake-up, and it’s all thanks to Sinners, the new supernatural horror film from director Ryan Coogler and star-producer Michael B. Jordan. Raking in a stunning $48 million during its opening weekend, the film has stormed past expectations to become the biggest debut for an original genre film since the pandemic.

Sinners has officially surpassed the openings of Jordan Peele’s Nope ($44.4M), Scream VI ($44.4M), and A Quiet Place Part II ($47.5M), all of which either came with major anticipation or were part of established franchises. Even Alien: Romulus ($42M), despite its legacy appeal, couldn’t compete with the sheer momentum of Coogler and Jordan’s latest.

Set in 1932 Mississippi, Sinners blends Gothic horror with historical depth, following twin brothers Smoke and Stack—both played by Jordan—who return to their haunted hometown. The story is as atmospheric as it is intense, and critics are already praising the film for its daring originality and immersive world-building. Jordan’s dual performance is earning him widespread acclaim, and Coogler’s direction is being hailed as one of his most inventive yet.

Joining Jordan in the cast are Hailee Steinfeld, Miles Caton, Jack O’Connell, Wunmi Mosaku, and Delroy Lindo—each bringing a layered performance to the film’s eerie narrative.

The movie’s domestic earnings include $4.7 million from Thursday previews, followed by $14.5 million on Friday, a spike to $16.5 million on Saturday, and a solid $12.3 million on Sunday. These numbers reflect not just a commercial win, but growing enthusiasm from audiences—suggesting that Sinners is more than just a weekend wonder.

Internationally, the film added another $15.4 million, bringing its worldwide total to $63.5 million in just a few days. It’s an especially sweet victory for Coogler, who developed the film under his Proximity Media banner. Warner Bros. won the distribution rights after a fierce bidding war, and the gamble is already paying off.

In a bit of ironic symmetry, Sinners bumped another Warner Bros. title, A Minecraft Movie, down to second place. The family-friendly video game adaptation brought in $41.3 million in its third weekend, boosting its domestic total to $344 million. Despite slipping to No. 2, it remains 2025’s top-grossing Hollywood release to date, with Marvel and Disney’s Captain America: Brave New World trailing at $410 million globally.

But the spotlight remains firmly on Sinners, whose blend of bold storytelling, critical praise, and audience support has it poised for a strong run in theaters. It’s a timely reminder that there’s still a massive appetite for smart, original horror—and that the genre is very much alive, kicking, and scaring its way to box office glory.
