Chromecast 2nd Gen and Audio Users Face a Strange Issue

Chromecast Users Stuck! Why Won’t It Cast?
March 10, 2025
Issue

Many users of the Chromecast (2nd gen) and Chromecast Audio are unable to cast videos or music. When trying to connect, they see a message saying:

“Untrusted device: [device name] couldn’t be verified. This could be caused by outdated device firmware.”

This error appears in apps like YouTube when users select their Chromecast to cast content.

No Fix Available Yet

Right now, there is no solution. Restarting, resetting, or updating won’t help. Users can only close the error message without being able to proceed. However, screensavers like Google Photos and weather updates are still working.

Are All Chromecast Devices Affected?

No, only Chromecast (2nd gen) and Chromecast Audio are having issues. Newer models like the Chromecast (3rd gen) and Chromecast Ultra are working fine.

Is Google Ending Support for These Devices?

Some users fear that Google has stopped supporting these devices. However, there has been no official announcement about this. The original Chromecast (1st gen), which Google announced as discontinued in May 2023, still works today. This suggests that the issue might be a temporary bug rather than a permanent shutdown.

What’s Next?

Google hasn’t commented yet, but many users are reporting the issue. Hopefully, a quick software update or server fix will resolve the problem soon.

Chromecast (2nd gen) and Chromecast Audio were first launched in September 2015. They run on firmware version 1.56.x, just like other Chromecast devices. Stay tuned for updates on a possible fix.
