Cricket Australia (CA) has announced it will back its players’ decisions on whether to return to the Indian Premier League (IPL), which is set to restart this Saturday, May 17. The league was suspended due to recent military tensions between India and Pakistan.

IPL Resumes After Ceasefire Between India and Pakistan

The IPL was put on hold last Friday after the worst fighting between India and Pakistan in almost 30 years. The conflict started last Wednesday when India carried out airstrikes on what it described as “terrorist infrastructure” in Pakistan and Pakistani-controlled Kashmir. This was in response to a deadly attack on Hindu tourists in Indian Kashmir, reportedly by Islamist militants.

Pakistan denied any involvement and called for an independent investigation. A ceasefire agreement, brokered by US President Donald Trump, was announced over the weekend.

17 Matches to Be Played; Final on June 3

India’s cricket board (BCCI) confirmed that the remaining 17 IPL matches will resume on May 17. The final is now scheduled for June 3. This short schedule may affect some Australian players, who will then have only eight days to prepare for the World Test Championship (WTC) final.

Quick Turnaround for Australian Stars

Top Australian players like Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, and Josh Inglis could face a tight schedule. The ICC WTC Final between Australia and South Africa will begin on June 11 at Lord’s in London.

Cricket Australia in Talks Over Security and Preparation

Cricket Australia said it is in constant touch with the Australian government and the BCCI regarding the safety and security of players.

“We will support players in their individual decisions whether to return to India or not,” CA said in a statement.
“Team management will work through preparation implications for the WTC Final for those who choose to play in the IPL.”

What Happens Next?

With tensions easing between India and Pakistan, the IPL is set to continue, but concerns over player safety and preparation for the WTC Final remain. All eyes are now on the choices Australian players will make in the coming days.
