Customs workers in Kailali have stopped their work today to protest the violent attack on their office chief, Anant Prasad Timilsina. They want the attackers to be punished strictly under the law.
Led by the Customs Agents Federation of Nepal, employees took action by refusing to process customs clearances, wearing black armbands, and holding a pen-down strike from 10 AM to 1 PM. Pravin Kumar Baidya, the federation’s president, said this was their way of showing serious concern.
Umesh Ghimire, a central member of the federation, stressed that security must be guaranteed for all customs staff. He warned that if the attackers are not dealt with firmly, the federation will organize stronger protests soon.
The violence happened last Saturday night when police in Dhangadhi Sub-Metropolitan City reportedly beat the customs chief. CCTV footage of the incident was leaked, sparking outrage among the customs community.
