After a lukewarm run in theatres and mixed critical reception, Detective Ujjwalan, a Malayalam mystery-comedy starring Dhyan Sreenivasan, is ready to make its OTT debut. The quirky detective drama will begin streaming exclusively on Netflix from July 11, but only in its original Malayalam language.
A local detective’s quiet life takes a dark turn
Directed by Indraneel Gopeekrishnan and Rahul G, Detective Ujjwalan follows the life of a village detective named Ujjwalan, played by Dhyan Sreenivasan. Known for solving small-time crimes in the peaceful village of Plaachikkaavu, Ujjwalan’s calm routine is upended by the arrival of a strange outsider.
What begins as a friendly rivalry quickly transforms into a dangerous mystery when a series of disturbing deaths shake the village. As Ujjwalan digs deeper, he encounters whispers of a terrifying figure known only as the Boogeyman.
A case that tests more than logic
The outsider’s presence not only disrupts the village’s peace but also triggers fear and confusion among the locals. As things spiral out of control, Ujjwalan must go beyond his usual logical reasoning and rely on instinct to find the truth behind the chaos.
The film mixes mystery with comedy while slowly building up to a high-stakes climax. In a surprise twist, Detective Ujjwalan also reveals a clever connection to the Minnal Murali universe, offering a thrilling bonus for fans of that world.
Netflix teases release with quirky poster
Netflix confirmed the film’s OTT release with a playful post on X (formerly Twitter), saying:
“Case endhaayalum Ujjwalan is always standing on business. Watch Detective Ujjwalan on Netflix, out 11 July in Malayalam.”
Whether you’re a fan of small-town mysteries, dark comedy, or looking to explore something fresh from Malayalam cinema, Detective Ujjwalan promises a strange and entertaining ride.
