German teenager Diego Dedura-Palomero made tennis history on Tuesday. At just 17 years old, he became the first player born in 2008 to win a match on the ATP Tour.
A Memorable Win in Munich
Diego Dedura-Palomero won his first-round match at the BMW Open in Munich after Denis Shapovalov retired. The score was 7-6 (2), 3-0 when Shapovalov could not continue playing.
A Unique Way to Celebrate
After his victory, Dedura-Palomero made a special gesture. He used his foot to draw a cross on the clay court and then laid down on it. He later said this was a way to show thanks because he is “quite religious.”
One of the Youngest Winners in Munich History
According to the ATP, only four players younger than Dedura-Palomero have won a match at the Munich tournament. One of them was Boris Becker, who won as a 16-year-old in 1984. Another was Dinu Pescariu, who beat John McEnroe in 1991 after turning 17.
From Lucky Loser to Main Draw Winner
Dedura-Palomero was not supposed to be in the main draw. He lost in the qualifying round to Alexander Bublik. But when Gael Monfils withdrew, the young player got another chance. He took full advantage and beat the eighth seed, Denis Shapovalov.
What’s Next for Diego Dedura-Palomero?
With this big win, Dedura-Palomero moves on to the second round. He will face Zizou Bergs next at the BMW Open.
